Cell Phones:
This school year, EPSD9 has worked to reduce student cell phone usage in its schools generally and especially within its classrooms. This effort has been highly successful and is due especially to our teachers working together to implement the new rules. Like all efforts in setting or establishing expectations for students, success depends on the adults, especially our teachers, being united in enforcing the expectation. Our teachers have done so brilliantly.
Reports from our middle schools especially have been very positive. Anecdotal evidence indicates that there is an increase in student to student interaction and a decrease in bullying behavior, especially cyber bullying.
While our school district has always had fairly tight expectations in the classroom, our District leadership saw an opportunity to make improvements in our schools by joining many school districts across the state and country in this effort. Our hope is that we would see improved engagement within our classrooms and improved interaction between our students outside the classroom.
CTE Regional Center:
Southern Oregon ESD is currently working on creating a CTE Regional Center that will likely be located near the White City Rogue Community College (RCC) Campus and open to all participating Districts. An anonymous donor would like to purchase and donate the property for this purpose.
The program is currently in the planning stages. At this time it is scheduled to begin this coming August with half-day programs for participating students. The first year programs are expected to be in the medical services area beginning with Phlebotomy, Medical Filing and Emergency Services Technician programs. Asante and Providence have agreed to donate equipment, but not operating costs. At this time RCC is not a participating partner. The current price per student has been set at approximately $8,000.00 per student plus ancillary costs such as transportation. This amount is well-above the average amount EPSD9 receives for a half time student. EPSD9 has communicated its interest in being a participating member while at the same time shared its concerns that costs per student are too high and would be prohibitively expensive.
Cascade Pool:
This fall the Cascade Pool has communicated with the District (the property owners) their concerns about remaining financially viable. The organization is in a challenging financial position with income, through membership and donations, not being equal to operating costs. The District has worked with the Cascade Pool to help them find ways to reduce costs and to obtain additional funding.
